RUAG Space Center
Where should someone go who is interested in world leading space technology? Tannefors in Linköping is a good place to start, where separation systems for space launchers are manufactured and used at launches worldwide.
Space technology has a strong foot hold in Linköping and has, since the late 1970’s, been conducted within the Saab Group. Now owned by the Swiss company RUAG since 2008 the focus is still the same – to develop mechanical systems for launch rockets carrying satellites into space.
Technology developed by the company has been used at more than 400 launches – all successful! The separation system, a structure with a diameter of up to 2.6 metres, must be able to withstand extreme strain such as strong vibrations, high G stress and variations in temperature. While at the same time delivering tremendous precision as the different parts of the vehicle must be released in the correct direction.
RUAG Space AB with some 60 employees in Linköping, delivers its technology to the world´s big space corporations in Europe, United States, Japan and Russia. On behalf of the European Commission and the European Space Agency ESA, RUAG is also involved in the European satellite system Galileo.
Two research satellites from ESA were launched in May 2009 from French Guiana. One carried a telescope which will supply scientists with information on how stars and galaxies are born. The other will study remaining radiation from the time when the Universe was created – some 13 to 15 billion years ago.
And Linköping is part of this!
Did you know that the first Swedish satellite – Viking – was built at RUAG Space (Saab Space at the time) here in Linköping. The work with the satellite was started in 1982 with the bulk of the activities performed in 1984 when the satellite was integrated and tested. The satellite, with it’s main scientific mission related to the Nordic light, was launched from the European launch site Kourou in South America in 1986.
