1990s

• The airborne radar PSR 980, manufactured by Ericsson, was presented in 1990. It was considered almost as good as an American AWACS but with a considerably lower price tag. The Swedish Military ordered three units for mounting on modified Saab 340s.

• The passenger aircraft Saab 2000 takes off for the first time in Linköping on 26 March 1992. Pilots were Erik Sjöberg och Lennart Nordh.

• On 26 January 1993 Saab presents a method for reducing noise levels by half in the passenger cabin by utilising microphones and loudspeakers. This concept is called active noise control.

• Saab-Scania AB is divided into two companies on 16 May 1995 – Saab AB and Scania AB. At his time Saab AB comprises of Saab Defence, Saab Aircraft and Saab Combitech.

• Saab 39 Gripen is presented in Linköping on 29 September 1995 in a two-seater configuration, JAS 39B, with deliveries beginning in 1998.

• The two-seater configuration, JAS 39B, flies for the first time on 11 June 1996.

The Saab B 17A piloted by Kjell Nordström and belonging to the Air Force Museum, takes to the air, on 11 June 1997, after several years of extensive renovation. The aircraft takes part in the air show commemorating the 60th Anniversary of Saab in Linköping on 6-7 September.

• On 15 December 1997 Saab decides to close down production of the Saab 340 and Saab 2000 as production is no longer profitable. A total of 459 Saab 340’s and 63 Saab 2000’s were produced.

• Saab delivers its 500th regional aircraft, a Saab 340, to Mesaba in USA.

• In Pretoria on 3 December 1999, Saab and British Aerospace sign an agreement with South Africa covering the purchase of 28 Saab 39 Gripen and 24 trainers BAe Hawk. This contract is worth MSEK 16,000 and the counter purchase included goods and services valued at MSEK 75,000.
